Why is Japanese whisky so expensive?

Demand exploded worldwide after Japanese whiskies began topping international awards, and aged stock simply ran out — whisky distilled twenty years ago can't be rushed. Many distilleries paused their age-statement releases entirely, making older bottlings genuinely scarce and highly collectable.

Is Japanese whisky similar to Scotch?

They share the same DNA — malted barley, pot stills and oak casks — but Japanese whisky typically favours balance, softness and clarity over peat and power. If you enjoy Speyside or Highland malts, you'll feel right at home.

What's the best Japanese whisky for beginners?

Suntory Toki or Hibiki Japanese Harmony are approachable, affordable entry points. From there, step up to Nikka From the Barrel for richness or a Hakushu single malt for freshness.

How should I drink Japanese whisky?

However you like — but try the highball: one part whisky to three or four parts chilled soda over plenty of ice. It's how much of Japan drinks whisky with food, and it lets the delicate flavours shine.
